Historic Border Countries, Lakes & Hadrian’s Wall

 

7^th – 11^th September

 

From Roman legions to noble estates, scenic lakes to local distilleries, this holiday promises a rich tapestry of experiences in the heart of Border Country.

 

Whilst on tour, the following program includes;

 

DAY ONE

 

• Our route will take us through the magnificent Yorkshire Dales with a stop in Settle prior to continuing into Cumbria where we visit historic Kendal where you cane explore the town's historic attractions at leisure or wander and roam Kendal’s high street is surrounded by side full of independent traders. 

 

DAY TWO

 

• This morning we journey into Scotland to visit Drumlanrig Castle and Country Estate. Home to the Duke of Buccleuch and his ancestors for over 400 years, we enjoy a guided tour of the castle. There are 40 acres of gardens including tranquil woodlands, rose gardens, borders, and more. Our lunchtime stop is Dumfries where you are free to explore at leisure. Perhaps visit Robert Burns House, enjoy a stroll along the River Neith, browse the town’s shops, and find a spot for lunch. Later we visit Annandale Distillery where they use traditional methods to manufacture single cask single malt whisky.  We enjoy a tour of the facility, learning about the production process. As a memento of our tour, we will receive a gift pack containing an Annandale Whisky glass and a mini bottle of Annandale Whisky to enjoy at home.

 

DAY THREE

 

• Today we journey the short distance to visit Roman Vindolanda, one of the best preserved Roman forts and museums on the Hadrian’s Wall. Also here is the Roman Army Museum, where you will learn what life was like for a soldier guarding the wall on Rome's Northern frontier. 

 

DAY FOUR

 

• Today we take a scenic drive into the Lake District to the pretty town of Keswick on the banks of Ullswater. The capital of the North Lakes, Keswick has a range of shops, galleries, and interesting places to explore. This afternoon we journey to Glenridding on the shore of Ullswater to board the lake ‘steamer’ for a leisurely scenic cruise on the lake to Pooley Bridge where we return to the coach and journey back to Carlise. 

 

DAY FIVE

 

• Our homebound journey takes us via the historic market town of Barnard Castle home of the world renowned Bowes Museum home of many priceless pieces of art.  We also have a comfort stop at the popular Mainsgill Farm Shop where you can wander the two floors of gifts, clothing and home, or even visit the animals on the small farm.
