Halifax Peice Hall & Hebden Bridge

Halifax Peice Hall & Hebden Bridge

Halifax & Hebden Bridge

Calderdale's largest town, Halifax has one of the most complete Victorian townscapes in Britain, with many impressive buildings, such as the Grade II* listed Town Hall, the work of Sir Charles Barry, designer of the Houses of Parliament. Halifax Minster is one of the finest buildings in Yorkshire and has been at the heart of the local community for over 900 years.

Halifax is also home to the truly unique Grade I listed Piece Hall; the only remaining cloth hall in Britain. The building has undergone a multi-million pound refurbishment and reopened to the public on Yorkshire Day, Tuesday August 1st 2017. The Piece Hall is home to a range of shops, bars and cafes, with more new businesses opening in the coming months and an exciting year round event programme.

If you enjoy shopping, the Victorian Halifax Borough Market and contemporary Westgate Arcade offer dozens of independent shops and cafes. Harveys is one of the oldest independent department stores in the country, and the Woolshops Shopping Centre has major high street names.

Hebden Bridge has been voted as "the greatest town in Europe" by The Academy of Urbanism, is officially the best small market town in the UK (winner of the best Small Market Town and People's Choice categories in the 2016 Great British High Street Awards) and was described in British Airway's 'High Life' magazine as "one of the world's funkiest towns" .

Hebden Bridge's people have been instrumental in creating and maintaining the town's character. Possessing a strong community spirit, the town is renowned for its creative culture, with a fascinating history and a mission for sustainability. Unique double decker "over and under dwellings" hang on the leafy green hillsides above the town. Houses were built in terraces with 4 to 5 storeys because space was limited by the steep valleys and lack of flat land. The upper storeys face uphill while the lower ones face downhill, with their back wall against the hillside, each with separate entrances.
